Il tatuaggio (derivato dal francese tatouage, a sua volta dal verbo tatouerr e questo dal termina anglosassone è sia una tecnica di decorazione artistica del corpo dell’uomo, sia la decorazione prodotta con tale tecnica. Tradizionalmente la decorazione è destinata a durare per molto tempo, tendenzialmente per sempre, anche per questo va sempre deciso seriamente se farlo e cosa, ma in tempi recenti sono state inventate tecniche per realizzare tatuaggi temporanei.
Nella sua forma più diffusa, la tecnica del tattoo consiste nell’incidere la pelle ritardandone la cicatrizzazione con sostanze particolari (più precisamente è chiamata scarnificazione) o nell’eseguire punture con l’introduzione di sostanze coloranti nelle ferite. Questa tecnica, che oggi sembra facile da eseguire, è stata resa possibile dal susseguirsi e dall’evolversi di tecniche più svariate e ardue nell’antichità.
Dalla fine degli anni 60 in poi la cultura del tatuaggio ha conosciuto una progressiva diffusione in tutto il mondo, prima nelle sottoculture giovanili tipo gli hippy, nelle carceri e fra i biker e poi ha conquistato lentamente ogni strato sociale e ogni fascia d’età. Negli anni 2000 ad oggi il tatuaggio ha avuto una diffusione via via crescente, spinto dalla popolarità dei personaggi pubblici che li hanno sul corpo, e da immagini ovunque che lo hanno fatto diventare per molti una moda per persone di tutte le età.

In its most widespread form, the technique of tattooing consists in incising the skin by delaying its healing with particular substances (more precisely it is called fleshing) or in performing punctures with the introduction of coloring substances in the wounds. This technique, which today seems easy to perform, was made possible by the succession and evolution of more varied and arduous techniques in the antiquity. From the end of the 60s onwards the tattoo culture has experienced a progressive diffusion in tut he world, first in youth subcultures such as hippies, in prisons and among bikers and then slowly conquered every social layer and every age group. In the 2000s to the present day, tattooing has become increasingly widespread, driven by the popularity of public figures who have them on the body, and by images everywhere that have made it a fashion for many people of all ages.
